Microsoft Fabric for business

Bring data engineering, BI, and data science together in Microsoft Fabric. AIRES implements the unified analytics platform for companies.

What Microsoft Fabric is and why it matters for business

Microsoft Fabric is the unified analytics platform Microsoft launched in 2023. It brings into a single SaaS product everything that used to require separate tools: data engineering, storage, data science, real-time analytics, business intelligence, and data governance.

For companies already in the Microsoft ecosystem — Microsoft 365, Azure, or Power BI — Fabric is the natural next step toward a modern data architecture, without adopting technologies foreign to their current stack.

OneLake: one data lake for the whole organization

At the heart of Microsoft Fabric is OneLake, a single logical data lake that stores all of an organization’s data in an open format (Delta Parquet). Every Fabric workload can access it without copying or moving data between services.

That removes one of the most common problems in fragmented data architectures: copies of the same data multiplying across systems, with the storage costs, inconsistency risks, and management overhead that come with them.

With OneLake, the same data feeds data engineering (Spark/Notebooks), the data warehouse (SQL analytics endpoint), data science (ML with Python/R), and Power BI reports — all from one repository.

Core Microsoft Fabric capabilities

Data Engineering (Lakehouse): Apache Spark notebooks for large-scale data transformation and processing, with native Delta Lake support.

Data Factory: data integration and orchestration pipelines with more than 150 native connectors, for both batch ingestion and ELT transformations.

Synapse Data Warehouse: a high-performance serverless SQL warehouse for analytical queries on OneLake data.

Real-Time Intelligence: streaming data ingestion and analysis with KQL (Kusto Query Language) and Event Streams for real-time analytics use cases.

Data Science: native MLflow integration for model lifecycle management, plus Jupyter notebooks and AutoML.

Power BI (Data Activator): the visualization and reporting layer, fully integrated and with direct access to OneLake data — no extra connectors needed.

When to migrate from SQL Server or traditional Power BI

Fabric isn’t the right fit for every company. These are the signs it’s time to assess a migration:

  • Your BI team spends too much time moving data between systems before it can analyze it.
  • Power BI is falling short because of semantic model limits or growing data volumes.
  • You need machine learning or advanced analytics your current stack can’t support.
  • Several copies of the same data live in different systems, with conflicting versions.
  • The cost of maintaining license contracts with multiple vendors keeps rising.

For companies running on-premises SQL Server and Power BI Desktop, Fabric offers a gradual migration path — no need to replace everything at once.

Implementation in midsize companies

Microsoft Fabric is licensed by capacity (F SKUs), so it scales from small deployments to large enterprises. For a midsize company, a typical implementation starts by migrating existing dataflows to Data Factory, building the Lakehouse in OneLake, and reconnecting existing Power BI reports.

At AIRES, we help companies assess, design, and implement Microsoft Fabric. We bring hands-on experience in data architecture and deep knowledge of the Microsoft ecosystem to make the transition safe and the return measurable.

Frequently asked questions

Does Microsoft Fabric replace Azure Synapse Analytics? Yes. Microsoft Fabric is the strategic successor to Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Power BI Premium, and Microsoft is consolidating those offerings into Fabric. Existing Synapse customers have documented migration paths, and Microsoft continues to support Synapse during the transition.

Does Fabric require you to be fully on Azure? Fabric is a SaaS service that runs on Azure, but its connectors can reach data in other clouds or on-premises systems. Your whole infrastructure doesn’t need to be on Azure, although integration is smoother if you’re already in the Microsoft ecosystem.

What’s the difference between Microsoft Fabric and Power BI Premium? Power BI Premium is the BI layer of Microsoft Fabric. Fabric is the full platform: Power BI Premium plus every data engineering, data warehouse, ML, and real-time capability. In practice, a Fabric F64 license or higher includes capabilities equivalent to Power BI Premium P1.
